Note From Marilyn

Marilyn

Dear team members,

Agents from New Orleans and the gulf coast that have access to a computer are beginning to post and look for news on the PREA center.  Many of you have generously offered a room in your home for agents who are now homeless and without work.  I have sent your names on to Prudential.  If you log on to PREA   you can go to the agent forum on the home page and send messages to offer your support.  If anyone is looking for a knowledgeable assistant, you may find someone to help.  Thank you all for the compassion you have shown with the many efforts you are making in your offices to help.  I am so proud to be a part of  Prudential Gary Greene, Realtors .

Great Source

One of the best sources for all kinds of information right now on the Internet regarding Katrina is Craigslist.  Also Houston Association of Realtors has set up links to donate shelter, apply for shelter or look for shelter.  Make sure you know what your Association is doing.

The current plea for items to help Katrina survivors include - shoes, diapers (both adult and baby) games, toys, colors and coloring books.  Don't take any items to the Astrodome, take them to The Star of Hope (they are sorting and distributing all the clothing to the Astrodome), The Salvation Army or Goodwill. There has been an outpouring of help - My granddaughters Girl Scout troop has been working with a locate church who is housing 70-80 people.  They play with the kids, games, face painting, etc. so that they are occupied.  The kids in my subdivision in Cinco Ranch have set up a Lemonade Stand - the money to be donated to Katrina.

Locating Temporary Housing

Housing_2
The Texas Association of Realtors has asked that we assist in identifying any source of temporary housing.  If you have a property, you can list it with National Emergency Resource Registry.  You must fill out an intial contact page to become a member, but the process only takes a few minutes.  All the instructions are on the TAR link above.

Help the Pets

La_dogsLaRetta asked that I share this information.  There has been an outpouring of volunteers to help take care of the pets displaced by Katrina. The  Houston SPCA accepted about 300 animals last Sunday from the New Orleans SPCA.  Some of the animals that are adoptable have been sent to San Antonio and the College Station area.  Houston's Citizens for Animal Protection took some of the animals.  Check out both of these sites if you are intested in helping out.  CAP's site is asking for dog and cat food.  Gay D. has started gathering newspapers and other items that are needed.  You may want to coordinate with her if you have items to donate.

Good News

Good_news_1 Linda Williams reports that her niece and other family members have been account for and are safe.

Prudential has the following update on our fellow realtors affected by Katrina:

All of the Prudential Real Estate affiliate offices in Hurricane Katrina's path with the exception of Prudential Gardner Realtors, sustained little or no damage.

All of the management staff of Prudential Gardner Realtors have been accounted for.  Broker/owner Glenn Gardner is in Baton Rouge, LA, where he is currently setting up a central command station.  He sends heartfelt thanks to everyone for their thoughts and prayers.

John Phillps, manager of the Biloxi, MS, Prudential Gardner Realtors office, confirmed that the office there was destroyed.

What We're Doing to Help

Pru_cares_logo_1_1Prudential Gary Greene will be accepting donations for the victims of Hurricane Katrina, to be matched dollar for dollar by the Prudential Foundation from $25 up to a maximum of $5000. This is a great way to make your act of generosity go even farther and help more people.
To contribute, write your personal check to "Prudential CARES Disaster Relief Fund-Hurricane Katrina."   Cash donations of any size will certainly be accepted as well. Checks and cash donations should be given to Lou D.  Donations are tax deductible and those who donate $250 and more will receive an acknowledgment letter from the foundation.

A Prudential Financial Community Resources committee selects the specific disaster relief organizations to receive the donations and matching funds.

For those having items to donate - Kristi S. will be coordinating that effort.  All items need to be delivered to the office by Wednesday, September 7.  The following items are needed.

  • Diapers
  • Baby Wipes
  • Baby Formula
  • Blankets & Sheets
  • Towels
  • Pillows
  • Toiletries (shampoo, deodorant, soap, toothpaste, toothbrush, hairbrush, etc.)
  • Games & Toys
  • Clothing & Shoes
  • Undergarments for children & adults (new)
  • Single serving snacks such as Pop-Tarts & cereal bars
  • Peanut butter
  • Heat & eat foods such as chili, stew, canned pasta with sauce & canned vegetables

Inside_astrodome_1

A friend of Sewell's who volunteered at the Astrodome says that the following items are needed there.

Men's clothing such as plain, Haines t-shirts and shorts.  Women's clothing - especially larger sizes.  Plain t-shirts and jeans or shorts.
Everyone was begging for slippers or flip flops. Socks!  Underwear, summer clothing, blankets, hygiene items and especially prayers.
Fox News  (speaking of Fox - check out what Greta Van Susteren has to say about Houston) just put out a plea for new underwear & socks.  I heard yesterday that they were in desperate need of wheelchairs - so if you have a source.

Katrina Update

TEXAS HOSPITALITY EXTENDED TO HOMELESS
AUSTIN (HoustonChronicle, AP, governor.state.tx.us) – Texas is welcoming more than 80,000 hurricane refugees at massive shelters around the state. A warehouse at KellyUSA in San Antonio will accept 25,000, and Dallas will host 25,000 at Reunion Arena. This is in addition to the nearly 13,000 who are housed in the Astrodome and the 18,000 expected to find shelter in the Reliant Park complex in Houston.
Thirty-two Red Cross shelters are set up across the state. Officials estimate about 55,000 people are staying in Houston area hotels. The governor’s website says there are 48 shelters available throughout Texas, 22 of which are open.
Gov. Perry has asked the Texas Department of Housing and Community Affairs (TDHCA) to identify all vacant income-eligible housing units for use by refugees. TDHCA has sent a letter to the IRS requesting a waiver for the use of Housing Tax Credit units for transient use by the Hurricane Katrina disaster victims. So far 7,000 units have been identified east of I-35.
If approved, FEMA may distribute vouchers to victims requiring housing. Information on voucher distribution will be disseminated through the media and through briefings on site at the Astrodome. Written notification from the federal government is pending at this time. The state of Texas is also partnering with the Texas Apartment Owners Association to identify vacant units which will also be handled through the FEMA voucher process.
The governor has requested federal emergency assistance, and an emergency disaster declaration for the state has been issued to free up resources to deal with the existing challenge of providing services to hurricane refugees.
